GRAND TERRACE - City staff, representatives of Stater Bros. Markets and residents met at Stonewood and La Paix streets Tuesday evening to contemplate an imaginary wall dividing a proposed store.

It's a store many believe will bring in valuable jobs and city revenue while residents say the development will ruin their views and their sleep.

Residents gathered behind the proposed Stater Bros. market with questions and complaints about the six-foot wall, truck delivery hours and other issues they wanted solved before the City Council votes on the project at 6 p.m. meeting today.

After an hour and a half, most residents had returned home with a few answers but without altering the proposal.

Joyce Powers, city community and economic development director, said many of the issues were already set in stone.

"They've already evaluated whether or not they can relocate the wall based on the grade and existing utilities, and they can't (put it anywhere else)," she said. "We are still working on the landscaping in front of it."

The four feet of trees, vines and bushes in the current plan is far from the pocket park that resident Cynthia Bidney wanted.

"Every morning, from my front door right there I just take a deep breath because it's so beautiful," she said. "Now they want a wall and trucks delivering 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday?

"We're not opposed to Stater Bros.. We're willing to negotiate, but nobody's giving anything."

Resident Greg Gardner, a former contractor and truck driver, said he knew from experience that the project would disrupt the neighborhood.

"A six-foot wall is just tall enough that you'll still hear the trucks, you'll still see the exhaust pipe spewing stuff out, but you won't see the truck," he said.
