CJUSD Meetings Should Be of Interest to All

The CJUSD has an open ear. They say they want input from Parents, and Community Members. There are many issues facing the Children and Citizens of Grand Terrace which also have a relationship with CJUSD.

The Short List:

Improve Middle School Instruction and Transition so that High School Drop Out Rate is also Improved.

Improve Parent/ Teacher Communication and Information Sharing.

Improve Existing School Facilities and Programs.
Low Budget Improvements:

Ball Room and Square Dance Program at ALL SCHOOLS
Public Singing ( Song Books) or Choir at ALL SCHOOLS (This aids in Reading and Diction)
Walking 15 minutes every morning as a school warm up activity.

Remove the Jail like Bars around the Football field

INSIST ON SOCIAL Behavior and Conduct at all School Activities. ARREST and REMOVE People who are Noisey at Graduations, and rush the Field during a Game. Are we so uncivil that we have low standards of public conduct? Are the Students on the field gladiators being fed to lions for our Entertainment? There is a school of thought that if you build a fence, it keeps honest people out of the school yard, and criminals and nare do wells a safe place to work.

Schools should not look like a Jail.

Mid Budget Items:

Healthy Food: Low Salt, Low Fat, and Nutritional Balance... INCREASE VEGGIES and FRUIT.
Fresh Fruit and Veggies available at low or no cost to students.

Master Teachers mentoring new teachers for 2 years.

Encourage Parents or Block Parents to Walk their Students to and From School. A walking School Bus Program. Increased physical activity, and cuts use of carbon fuels, and cuts down on traffic problems and risks around the schools.

Plant Fruit Trees and have a garden at every school as a science and nutrition lab. Encourage students to eat fruit off the school trees when in season.

Higher Budget Items:
Marching Band for EVERY SCHOOL... *This could be part of the 15 Minutes walking..

High Budget Items.

Building of High School #3 in a SAFE PLACE, if AES and the Rail Road is going to exist where they are the HIGH SCHOOL #3 should be relocated.

Moving GT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL to the East... using Eminent Domain to Take the Day Care Center, and Pink House and perhaps some additional lots to make up for lost land due to Freeway Construction. The City of Grand Terrace has designated the entire area of GT ELM as Commercial Zone so Schwab and Friends want the entire School to be Developed by .... a designated Developer other than the School District. The City has failed to identify to the public a site for a replacement School or an offer to Pay to Replace GT ELM at the Cost of the Developer. With Freeway Plans moving forward this is an issue that must be resolved in the process of eliminating the darn Grand Terrace 215 Bottle Neck. ( Let us hope this will encourage folks to stop using Barton Road and Mt. Vernon and Michigan as Freeway Detours.)

Include in Freeway Construction, Sound Wall, and Trees along the Cal Trans Right of Way.

Modern Public/School Computer Library / Lab and Wi Fi Service for all community in CJUSD Students and Parents.

Solar Energy PV Pannels on Roofs and Covered Parking areas, can generate all the power needed at school and perhaps additional power for the Power Grid.

Trash Reduction and Recycling Plan:

Visual and Auditory Checks in K-3 the FIRST MONTH OF SCHOOL. Learning Styles and Differences and Needs Identified EARLY. Accommodation, and Mitigation and Remediation DONE EARLY AS NEEDED IMMEDIATELY, not years down the road.

Zero Books may be a possibility. It may be time to have all books on line and all students trained to use a computer for reading data and texts. There is still a need to learn to use a pen and paper, but there is no reason for 40 lbs of books in a back pack.

I am sure you'll think of more than what is on my short list.

Colton Unified seeks input
Parents, community urged to help plan district's future
Carolyn G. Schatz, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 11/28/2007 06:50:28 PM PST

GRAND TERRACE - Colton Joint Unified is asking the community to get involved and help chart the course of how its schools operate.

"You can't change the direction of the river," Superintendent James Downs told about 20 parents assembled Tuesday in the cafeteria at Terrace Hills Middle School in the first of five scheduled community meetings on mapping out strategies for the district.
But you can guide its direction, he said.

"Tonight, we're taking you on a tour of our plan for the future," Downs said.

Downs enthusiastically encouraged all willing to volunteer their time to join one of six action teams that will spend the next few months redesigning Colton Joint Unified.

The teams, to be composed of parents, teachers and community stakeholders, are to help flesh out a five-year action plan, addressing everything from evaluating district programs and curriculum to developing a facilities master plan.

"This has never been done before," said Todd Housley, who sat on the initial planning team of parents, community members, civic leaders, and school district employees that met in October to create a draft strategic plan for revamping district policies and procedures.

"We need to do this to correct errors of the past," he said.

Housley mentioned the district's yet-to-be-built third high school and a proposal to move all elementary schools to a single-track year-round schedule as continuing issues of concern for parents.

Downs - who told parents that despite years of delays, the new high school would open by 2011 - said parents would now have an active voice in how school policy develops.

"You're not going to be watching anything," he said. "You'll actually be part of the creation. The strategic plan affects your child in every way - how they're taught, how they learn and the facilities they learn it in."

Having recently taken over as interim superintendent in March and then as superintendent in July, Downs is eager to bring about positive changes that will benefit students.

Goals for the next five years include doubling the percentage of students who perform at the proficient and advanced level on California Standards Tests; having at least 95 percent of students graduate with a high school diploma; and preparing all students for college entrance and/or certification in a career/technical field.

Some 120 slots are open for community volunteers to help start turning things around, Nichols said. Action team volunteers must be willing to spend 40 hours in evening meetings over the next three months, with the finished product to go the school board in May.

Sign-ups for volunteering are available at the community meetings.

Planning sessions

Four more hour-long informational meetings are scheduled. To volunteer to help build Colton

Joint Unified School District's plans for the future, attend one of the following meetings:

6:30 p.m. Monday: Jurupa Vista Elementary, 15920 Village Drive East, Fontana
6:30 p.m. Tuesday: Ruth O. Harris Middle School, 11150 Alder Ave., Bloomington
5:30 p.m. Dec. 10: Wilson Elementary, 750 S. Eighth St., Colton
6:30 p.m. Dec. 11: Grant Elementary, 550 W. Olive St., Colton

The work begins with the first action team meeting at Ruth O. Harris Middle School: 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13

Blue Mt. Senior Villas LIST Now OPEN:

Assuming the Court finds that the Center for Better Housing and the Redevelopment Agency of Grand Terrace has complied with the prior Court Order/Decision of Judge Wade, and or has mitigated the problems in their plan and design of the Blue Mt. Senior Villas and Senior Center they predict that "Framing Will Be Done in Spring 2008"

The Grand Terrace City News Published a Phone Number for Seniors to put their names on an INTEREST LIST. Remember of the 120 Apartments only 11 will be at market rate. All others will be for Low and Very Low Income Seniors you may not qualify for an apartment and being on the list may not give you a priority of someone with a Section 8 Housing Check from out of town. This could add up to 240 Seniors to our community. Remember we are told they won't all have cars, and there is no regular public transportation to the facility and there is no plan for the "Management or City" to provide transportation.

BUT, If you are interested it may be prudent to put your name on the list.

(818) 905 2430 is the Phone number to call:

That Phone Number Belongs to:

Which Demonstrates an interesting relationship between businesses and how the Money is skimmed off of the 15 Million RDA DEBT the City is Paying, and the Rents Collected by the Development. Remember the Lease Income to the City is cost is like 10.00 per year... there is no Repayment of the RDA DEBT by the Center for Better Housing.... Tax Payers will be paying that Debt and Interest.

Also remember there is still a court date regarding the construction and design, so the project completion date may continue to slip.

Glad they saved the Walnut tree.... what about the Pomegranate Plants.... they could have been transplanted and their fruit and juice is one of the best for your health.

RED FLAG ALERT
3:00 AM WENS NOV. 27, 2008
EXPECTED WINDS AND HIGH FIRE RISK
LIMIT THE RISK
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SMOKE AND FLAMES

Aggressive Dogs Reported

Dear Gramps:

Two White Labrador Dogs were on the run through the area around Terrace View Middle School, Bentwood, Holly and so forth. This is why all the dogs up and down the streets were barking and having a fit.

These dogs were in a hunting mode, pedestrians, cats and anything they could find was aggressively charged and provoked. I did not see any actual attacks but this did not look like it was going to end well.

Folks, keep your dogs and cats in the house at night. They are motivated by nature to pack activity, and solo dogs and cats are prey. Natural Foxes and Coyotes are not the only things that eat backyard pets.

It is unlikely these large white Labrador type dogs would hurt a child or adult, but pack behavior is strong and small animals would be at risk. I hope these dogs made it home and no other pet or human was harmed.

Gramps Reply:

I received several reports of these white dogs roaming and hunting last night. This mornings email box had 14 emails on this one subject. Clearly these dogs have their neighborhood concerned. I hope the owners double their efforts at keeping their pets home. Perhaps some training is due as some of the reports indicated aggressive behavior.

I think the right thing to do is to call Animal Control if you see the dogs again...

Perhaps some one could start a In Grand Terrace Pet Blog where there is a book of Mug Shots of dogs and their owner's phone number or email addresses. I often take in running dogs and return them to their owners rather than call Animal Control. But, I make it a point to know the pets in my area and only will help the friendly pets not the aggressive ones.

Forclosed Homes: Code Enforcement:

With More Foreclosures and Abandoned Homes in Grand Terrace it is time for some Codes directing the Realtors and Banks to comply with the same conditions Residents and Homeowners must.

In addition, when a home is put into default, vacated or listed for sale the City Code Enforcement should be notified. Code Enforcement shall hold the realtor or bank holding title responsible for the monthly care of the lawn, watering, and security of the property. Swimming pools should be drained and made safe.

The Citizens Patrol and Sheriff Deputy should also include these homes as places to keep an eye on for squatters, and other vandals and thieves.

Finally, Bank Owned homes that don't sale should be discounted until they are sold. Perhaps at a rate of 10 Percent Per month until there is a buyer. An empty Million Dollar House is as much Blight as an Empty 400.000 or 50,000.00 home. Banks, Realtors, and Financial Institutions enjoyed the Orgy of increasing property costs and values. It is time the cost of their party is paid by them, not the citizens or those duped into buying at over valued prices.

Westwood Lane Blight in Action

Blighted Areas such as Honey Hills and Westwood Lane, attract Drug Business or so it would appear in the recent arrest of three Men operating some sort of illegal business distributing or dispensing dangerous drugs or medical devices and using a minor child in conjunction with their business operations either as a cover or front.

Yep it may be time to take a look at redeveloping those houses on the hill and make them into perhaps a Blue Mountain Business district that has high end Restaurants and Strip Clubs with a View of the Valley and Mountains (when the air is clear). This would provide income from taxes, that illegal drug businesses don’t pay.

Now on the serious side. Keep alert. When the local economy does not provide legitimate jobs sufficient to pay for living in the community, illegal activity will take root. With the prevalence of drug use, and graffiti (Drug Dealers/Gang Territory Markers and Advertisements), burglary and family disturbances you can add it up to an increase of the use and distribution of Drugs in a community and a legitimate economy that does not support its citizens.

Please, be alert, this cycle is never going to end unless the cost of living in GT is equal to what can be earned in Grand Terrace, and the family and neighbors of Grand Terrace refuse to tolerate drug use, sales, and drug money.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving....

Please folks lets take a moment and say thanks in ways more than stuffing our turkey and our stomachs, and watching football.

This weeks Grand Terrace City News demonstrates how citizens can group together and get things done. Helping a home owner with labor to clean up the yard and paint a house. Or prior weeks tree planting. Or the Help provided to local fire victims, and families in the community that are in need. Well, I say more of this is needed.

If you see a neighbors tree needs trimming. Offer a helping hand... If you know an elderly person that would appreciate the paper on their front stoop every morning and you are walking by in the morning anyway.... Toss that paper to the front door. It can be a little individual act or a group activity.

Yeah for these acts of being Thankful for what you have and how you can use those assets to be of service to others.

This is what makes for a community. We shall abstain on drawing negative comparisons, I am sure some will be Thankful for that.

Now a Caution:

There have been recent arrests including Battery, Burglary, and Elder Abuse. It is an unfortunate thing that Drugs, and Alcohol use is often a part of the Celebration during the Holiday Months. The trauma for the families and neighbors and community that this brings is often long lasting.

If you are a host for a gathering, please don't let your guests drive drunk or intoxicated. Please, if you must serve Alcohol, Moderation, and NO Driving PLEASE.

The first people an addict will hurt will be family members. So IF you are in a situation where you have a family member who is addicted or using drugs, please seek help. Don't just let things work out into a tragic outcome.

Thank All Who Are In Service in ALL the Ways You Serve.

End of Multi Tracking Elementary Schools for CJUSD

Apparently the School Board has come to the conclusion that many parents, and teachers have known for years. Multi Tracking Elementary Students leads to inconsistency of schedules and activities to the degree it is counter productive to effective education and the social development of children.

The on again off again nature of the Multi Track Schedule is not conducive to a child having a since of stability or structure. This causes a problem with day care and supervision after school.

Citizens and Perents need to work hard to make sure the programs at the magnate schools are retained if not expanded. All children should be able to have art, and music as part of their education. All children should be able to have added science, language or math classes if they show particular need or interest.

In addition to supporting the Single Track Schedule for the Schools, we as a community owe our teachers and children our support and collaboration in the educational experience.

We also need to try to increase the summer options for the children who are not in summer school.

This and the Traffic Light on La Cadena and Barton Road are Good Things...

Understanding Green Energy and GT Future

A Reader Emailed Gramps saying Hydrocarbons are not efficient after reading the prior posts about HYDROGEN Power for an alternative fuel for AES Power Plant or the Water Company. For those of you (including gramps who has to get his head around the terms and technology, here is the attachment to the email that was not posted along with the comments.

Gramps finds this information hopeful and forward looking.

Perhaps we should look at water as being both that what we drink but also that which provides a fuel for other activities. Perhaps we need to rethink our use of water and energy. When Hydrogen is used as fuel, apparently it then rebinds with Oxygen and either produces water or “Wet Vapor” depending on the system, neither of which is truly wasted, or negative. It may be that the process may have an actual environmental cleansing affect.

The long term problem would be how to balance water use, with availability, and eventually figure out how to use the waters in the ocean.

Some how I think this would be helpful… Hope you enjoy reading up on a topic that Grand Terrace could take a lead in if there were forward looking planning within City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. As a matter of fact Gramps would support the RDA spending 45 Million on this type of economic project rather than a Retail Area dependent on the continued use of Carbon Based Fuels, and Imports.

Such bold move would have opportunity shifts for business and employment here in Grand Terrace. Rather than following what was done 30 year ago, like building glorified strip malls and mega stores GT could become a Model, not a Copy.

We are about to see the City of GT come to the age of 30. Our leaders will pat themselves and the community on the back saying they have done what others said couldn't be done. Well, before they lead the cheers too loudly we should ask are we truly in a good financial situation with a RDA Debt of over 15 Million and an approval to increase that to 65 Million? For What should we as a community go into debt? This question and the topic of energy should be tied together if GT is to be Sustainable as a City, and frugal with the citizens taxes, which will be paying that debt, principal and interest.

ON-DEMAND HYDROGEN: NEW FUEL FOR A HYDROGEN ECONOMY?

Hydrogen economy: These are two words not often seen together any more. The concept of a hydrogen economy has stalled, but is not dead, perhaps just waiting for new ideas, new technologies, new breakthroughs - thus renewed interest - to push it forward.

The hydrogen economy meant running our cars and houses (mostly our cars) on the clean fuel and carrier of energy. Hydrogen fuel cells work perfectly well, yet are still expensive, and certainly hydrogen can be used as a fuel in internal combustion engines: BMW has a fleet hydrogen fueled sedans. The real stagnation point is in the generation, transportation and storage of the lighter-than-air-gas, the hydrogen infrastructure.

Even if the cost of building a hydrogen generation and distribution infrastructure could be magically paid for, there’s still the issue of on board vehicle tanks for pressurized or frozen, liquid fuel. Both technologies are a little finicky to be put into the hands of the general public.

Perhaps a new paradigm for a hydrogen economy has to be developed, one that’s built around on-demand hydrogen,

There are at least two technologies, neither of them particularly new, that could be used to generate hydrogen immediately before it’s consumed. One, is to split water through the help of un-oxidized metals (simply known as metals) the other is to dissociate water molecules with very high temperature solar thermal energy.

The first is basically described in an old ”You Can with Beakman and Jax” clipping from the comics section of my Sunday newspaper. It’s called Experiment #2: Take Water Apart.

“ Water molecules are held together by a force of nature. It takes energy to overcome it. Add a tiny pinch of salt to a glass of water and gently drop in a nine-volt battery. When the water settles down, you’ll see mist-like clouds on the terminals. Oxygen forms on the (+) plus side and hydrogen forms on the (-) negative side.(Throw away the battery after the experiment.)”

What’s really happening here is the slightly salty water becomes an electrolyte and allows an electric current to pass between the (+) and (-) terminals. As it passes through water the current splits it apart. It’s known as electrolysis.

The 9 volt battery could be either a primary (use once and toss) or secondary (rechargeable) one. The primary battery makes electricity as a sacrificial anode (typically a zinc can) oxidizes or decays in the presence of the oxygen in air.

Basically it’s the primary battery and its sacrificial anode that form the driving technology behind Hydrogen Power Inc. (HPI) technology. In their case the device is tuned to make hydrogen, not electricity, and the sacrificial anode would be aluminum, not zinc.

(Most any metal that oxidizes easily could be used, by the way.)

The company calls its special recyclable aluminum AlumiFuel (tm). It’s replaceable AlumiFuel filled cartridges AlumiCell (tm) and a portable power generating system AlumiSystem (tm). The whole package is dubbed Hydrogen Now (tm) by the company.

Hydrogen Now would use recycled AlumiFuel in its AlumiCell cartridges as a sacrificial anode in a watery bath to generate hydrogen on-demand through electrolysis.

Hydrogen Power recently signed a Letter Of Intent with Hamilton Sundstrand for development of the hydrogen-on-demand technology.

Hamilton Sundstrand is no newcomer to hydrogen fuel cells. It’s a division of United Technologies which has been building fuel cells for a few decades now. They provide the fuel cells for the Space Shuttle.

It’s a technology to watch. If it could generate hydrogen in large enough quantities, we could someday refuel our cars with the replacement of an aluminum-filled canister.

As above, the other technology for on-demand hydrogen is to use the concentrated heat of the Sun to crack water apart and immediately consume the hydrogen in a fuel cell or perhaps store the hydrogen for later use.

Clean Hydrogen Producers (CHP) of Geneva, Switzerland is one company developing that technology and has recently granted Spanish renewable energy company Grupo Ibereolica an exclusive license right to promote, install and manage solar energy plants in Spain and Mexico using the CHP Solar Water Cracker, for a period of 20 years.

The CHP cracker would use a parabolic solar dish to concentrate sunlight on a thermal reactor where water would be dissociated. The resulting hydrogen and oxygen would be filtered out, with the hydrogen sent off to a fuel cell to allow it to combine with oxygen in the air and make electricity.

The temperature in the Solar Water Cracker furnace can reach 2200 C (3990 F) with a solar energy to electricity conversion rate (via the fuel cell) of 44 percent. (The company compares its technology with Stirling Energy Systems solar dish technology which converts at 27 percent.)

Clean Hydrogen Producers says its technology is scalable with systems shrinking to household-size.

Ibereolica seems confident in the technology and is planning multiple mass solar energy generation plants around it over the next five years. The company is pursuing 14, 50MW solar power plants in Spain and Mexico. To develop its presence in solar energy, Ibereolica did extensive research for appropriate technologies and found CHP's Solar Water Cracker system superior, according to a company release.

Hydrogen Power calls its technology disruptive; that is, disruptive to the current fossil fuel energy regime. That disruption would disappear when fossil energy companies invested and commercialized these, and perhaps other on-demand hydrogen technologies. They just want something profitable to sell at the pump or by the meter.

Selling energy can be a profitable business no matter where it comes from even it’s from the next possible step for these two technologies: combine them, use solar thermal energy to recycle the AlumiFuel.

From the Email InBox: Thankful in GT

Dear Gramps Please Post:

Thankful In Grand Terrace:

Thankful that Citizens and the Castle Coalition Supported the Rights of an Individual Home Owner.

Thankful for Judge Wade who is the Citizens Last Hope to have a Reasonable Approach to Development Implementation in Grand Terrace when RDA Funds and Land are Used.

Thankful for the Citizen Participation and Support of Family Centric Activities in Grand Terrace, the Halloween Haunt, Woman’s Club Hamburger Cook Out, the Lion’s and Fire House Pancake Breakfasts, Tree Planting, Flower Planting, Dumpster Day, Soccer, Basket Ball, Flag Foot Ball, Base Ball and Soft Ball and T-Ball teams, the Library, Adult Art and Craft Show, Summer Concert, Taste of the Terrace, City Birthday Party, Bingo at the Lion’s Club, and Senior Center.

The community will participate and become more of a community if the City Management conducted itself in a way to foster community input and participation. It was sad that not one member of the community participated in the Public Comments or Agenda Items of the last City Council Meeting except for the recipients of recognition and introductions. It is not fair to burden the City Council with the expectation that they are omnipotent. Public participation is necessary to support the Freedoms we hold dear.

For those who keep informed of City Activity and Post to this blog to keep the rest of us informed and activated… THANKS.

Thanks to all those who serve in the Military, and Protection Services. Thanks for all workers who earn less than 40.000.00 per year and struggle to live under the burden of ever increasing housing prices, transportation costs, and now food bills that are going up too.

Thanks to Teachers who teach and care for our children, Nurses who care for our elders, and the Clerk who stacks the cans of beans on the shelf at the store.

There are good people all around us…

Be Thankful for that.

Show you are thankful by an action of service to another and you won’t need a big turkey dinner to make you feel good.

From the Email InBox: More Ideas that are easy

Gramps Please add the following to your blog:

There should be a community E-Waste Day, and a place where we can properly dispose of Energy Saving Florescent Bulbs that also contain Mercury

The Light Bulb Container may be located perhaps at City Hall where Citizens could drive through and drop in their bulbs... Of course a Proper Hazmat Container would have to be made for this drop off point.

A Place to toss our Flash Light Batteries would be nice too...

These are all recyclable and should not enter out land fill, and potential water supply. (If not our water some ones..)

Just some more ideas of how we can be better world citizens by simple things done in GT...

I like the idea of the Water Company using some of its space to generate some if not all of the power needed to operate the water pumps. What IF SCE runs out of power or oil, we'd still have water and energy for pumping. This is well worth the investment.

From the Email InBox: Water in Grand Terrace

It is great news that the 40 Percent of water the Water Company was losing has been stoped. This is fantastic... it brings to question what took so long...

Now with power about to become a bigger issue and no more water losses to recaptuer the following thoughts came to mind as the meeting proceeded.

One, the Water Company could use Solar Power to power its pumps... The Solar Power could even convert Water into Hydrogen at the same time.

Two: Water being pumped up to storage then flows down to homes. Is there any way to run small in-line power generators? So when you turned on the water, the water company would be generating power to pump more water... It wouldn't zero out their need for water, but we know there are kilowatts in that water moving down hill and through the pipes...

Three: Is there a way for the City to stop watering Mt Vernon? The water runs onto the street when the "Island" near Canal Street waters the City Planted Plants. This sets a bad example.

Fourth: Is there a use for the water that is lost during the purge of the pipes? Irrigation to the parks? Or even Yards of Home Owners rather than sending it all down the road?

From the Email InBox: CC Meeting

Yes, given the opportunity the Citizens Show UP...

Yeah for the New Trees... A Project that was well supported by all sectors of the community...
Scouts, Football, City, AQMD, Citizens of all ages, shapes and sizes... YEAH for the folks who brought food, masks and tools...
Yeah for the Trash Removed
Yeah for the Halloween Haunt-
Woman's Club Hot Dog Dinner
Lion's Club Popcorn and treats
Yeah for the Woman's Club Hamburger Cook Out
Yeah for the Country Fair

Coming up

There should be a Dumpster Day in Spring...

City's Birthday- Free Cake
Daffodil Planting: Shame it is a Poisonous Plant Near a Child's Play area.
Taste of the Terrace - Free Dinner
Grand Terrace Days - Entertainment...

Recommended or Suggested Community Activity Days:

Obtain Rights to Edison Field on corner of Mt. Vernon and Canal and the strip between Canal and the Cal Trans Fence... Plant Fruit Trees for the Community to use. Avocado, Orange, and Nut Trees... that are suited for Drought, and Global Warming... Low Chill required productive Permaculture Plants...

Fence or have a mobile fence for the GT Goat Herd to work the weeds along the hills and in the Permaculture Public Orchards.

The Idea of Compact Efficient Apartment for Returning Vets and others who would benefit from a Sober Living Campus type housing.... is fantastic... That post is right on. Hope they are solar powered, and made as green as possible. If an offer came in for this kind of a development it should have a higher priority than 9 condos.

From the Email Inbox: City Council Meeting

Well, it is Nice for the City Manager/ Redevelopment Agency Director to ask again for approval for the listing of the Surplus Redevelopment Property by Local Realtors. Indicating that one of the parcels has an offer already.

Now, this land MUST BE SOLD... as the CITY has held onto it far to long, and the CITY WILL NOT BUILD LOW INCOME HOUSING FOR NON SENIORS... SO the State Of California has Demanded the sale of property.

Now, the Nature of Tom Schwab came out to bare... HE wants to insist that there is a Development Plan issued by the potential purchaser. He wants the City to Approve the Use even after losing the right to develop the property because he would not get state approval for any more RDA construction that is not Low Income for Non Seniors.

So Let's Just Pretend, a Private Person Came and Offered the City More Money but wanted to build not 9 units but units the same size as on the Senior housing, that would be... what 40 units. Oh Let's be Reasonable and say 20 units of low priced dormitory / hotel type housing for single people. NOT 9 Half Million Dollar Condos in that same space. Who should be allowed to buy the land...

The Highest Bidder... IF this is AMERICA and there is FREE Competition in Buying Government Surplus.

NO... Not in Grand Terrace.... Apparently the City Council and Tom Schwab want to control who buys or owns property and dictate how it is used or when it is developed. Even when they had failed to develop it themselves.

NOT Satisfied. I hope that some one Builds 40 small units for returning Veterans/ or Young people who have aged out of Foster Care. A Sober and Safe Housing Unit for LOW and VERY LOW INCOME Folks. Perhaps the Edison Easement can be developed as a Passive Park for them... Oh heck how about some nut and fruit trees for a community harvest.

There are Names for How Mr. Schwab Acts.... and Thinks... You won't post them.

AES HIGH SCHOOL SOLLUTION:

AES could solve the Problem they are having.

They could buy the property that is currently owned or to be owned by the CJUSD as it is listed on Loopnet. com as being for sale. This would unburden the CJUSD of yet another lemon land purchase.

AES then could develop a Hydrogen Production Facility to operate their Power Plant and to create Liquid Hydrogen for the Hydrogen Stations that the Governor wants to have in California.

AES could allow for multi function of the land so that the Buffer Zone of the land (Area between AES Plant and Residential and Commercial, is used for LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION.

This would make them a Clean Energy Producer... Yes there are risks with Hydrogen, but those risks are not much greater than compressed gas, and the other chemicals they are trying to get approved.

The bounty is that there is ZERO Carbon Used in a Hydrogen Plant and ZERO Green House Gasses, and ZERO reliance on OIL or Coal... NOW that would be a forward looking Power Plant.

Does the High School Fit on that Location, No not now not even if the AES Power Plant is rejected. The area in Riverside is Commercial, it is at the end of town, and remember the rail road right near it.

If GT is to have a High School. It should be a small Charter Type School with under 1000 students max. If your child want to be on a foot ball team they should go to CHS, if they want to take ballroom dancing for PE they can come to GT Charter High.

I suggest that GT Charter High can be built on land owned by Doug Jacobsen, and the City's Redevelopment Agency, in the Center of Town, in such a way as to add to the Public use of the Entire Facility as well as serve as a Charter School.

An old guy can dream can't I.

215 in 2015

The latest news is that the widening of the 215 will be underway in the year 2015... that is a few months more than 7 years from now...

Here is the problem. With the New Freeway and Off ramps GT RDA and all the land owners affected should be given notice of the design and land required for the project and the land should be acquired by the state or held by the CJUSD or the City until the final designs are done.

YES GT ELM should be able to hold on to or limit the re-use or new construction on all property adjacent to the ELM School it could then use the option to acquire the land at a reasonable cost rather than trying to replace a 7 year old business.

IF businesses are allowed to be on any property it should be with the understanding that it is a temporary site. Perhaps even allowing short term crops, or animals on the land in the interim. Perhaps a temporary place for nursery stock, or ??? BUT, NO NEW construction of homes or businesses until Cal Trans/SanBag are done with their designs.

A Bus Pick Up and Drop off for Commuters going to Orange County or Riverside would be nice, and we must remember existing businesses have the first option on relocation. well first after the school.

As welcome as the improved freeway is, we should keep the expense down as much as we can as a city.

In the Sat Sun GT in The News....

Where will it be?

Grand Terrace -- The suspense is building.

British retailer Tesco is opening dozens of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets in California and several in the Inland Empire. One of those speciality grocery stores is slated to come to Grand Terrace. But exactly where is a mystery.

Officials say there are two likely locations for a Fresh & Easy, both at Barton Road and Mount Vernon Avenue. One possible spot is the southwest corner in the Stater Bros. shopping center in the Stater Bros. shopping center. The other is the northwest corner behind Starbucks Coffee.

stephenwall@sbsun.com

Gramps's Note:

The GrandTerraceNews reported this weeks ago. It is interesting that Stepen Wall does not Name his source "Officials"... he is normally glad to drop the Name of Tom Schwab or Steve Berry. Perhaps his Official Source was the Blog. One thing is for sure there is no information in his article than that offered by the blog. Whoops actually there is less information the blog provided the location and for lease offers on both properties. The blog has looked up all information as to ownership of the property, and businesses being sold and offered for sale in Grand Terrace. The impact of one location over another is significant to the community of family businesses in Grand Terrace.

Small modestly profitable businesses, generate sustainability for a community, providing local employment for youth, adults, parents and business owners, while limiting the commute time away from community and home and family.

Local Employment, sufficient for providing an income sufficient to live in a community should be a goal. Increasing the lease cost or property cost of a business or home frustrates that circle of sustainability. Surrendering us to Real Estate / Banking Speculations, and Outside the Community Employment in order to sustain living in this Over Priced Valued Community.

I welcome the competition of Tesco's Fresh and Easy Stores. I hope that they increase and buy local produce and products. This is something that Stater Brothers is not doing. Have you tried to find products that are low in salt, and Free of Fructose in Stater Brothers?

Tesco Time Line:

Tesco opening six locations today

Tesco, the world's third-largest retailer, will roll out its first six U.S. grocery stores today in an ambitious bid for American shopping dollars.

The six Fresh & Easy stores opening today are in Arcadia, Anaheim, Hemet, Los Angeles, West Covina and Upland. The Hemet site had its soft opening a week ago.

The British retailer, whose U.S. arm is based in El Segundo, will follow the first half-dozen store openings in Southern California with 30 more planned by December. It hopes 200 stores will be in business by the end of 2008.

Tesco plans to spend $2 billion over five years to open possibly hundreds of stores in California, Arizona and Nevada - within trucking distance of the company's massive distribution center near Moreno Valley.

Local and National Economics:

The Great Depression was caused by:
Financial Speculation
Drought

We have
Drought
Financial Speculation (Housing Market)

The Solution:

Rather than setting the mass of Humanity out on their ears in this Economy and Society we need to have a rapid and clean stroke of Economic Justice to clean up the mess we are in.

Here are some basic fixes that balance justice and impact.

The Banks and Financial Institutions have profited from the Housing Market Inflation, and the Interest Payments.

Justice: Cut All Debts on Housing by a Devaluation of the Outstanding Loans by 30 Percent, and the Banks eat the Loss. Leaving the Home Owners in a home that they now can pay for at a refinanced calculation.

Provide Incentives for Production and Local Employment. Businesses where 90 Percent of employees live in a 10 mile proximity of the point of employment shall receive preference for government contracts.

Justice: (Employer's may build affordable housing for their employees, and housing can be part of employment compensation.)

Require All Businesses document an Employees right to work BEFORE they are able to have a business license. Update Information Annually.

In Grand Terrace, on a Local Level, all businesses should have a GT Business License Sticker or Placard on or in, all Vehicles doing business in GT. Lawn Services, Casual Labor, and other businesses coming through town don't pay taxes or get permits to work. They also don't employ local labor.

Justice: Employment becomes available as the demand for goods and services will remain for LOCAL Labor to fill the need. Some jobs like delivering papers, mowing the lawn, washing windows, can be done by youth entrepreneurs.

It is time for OUT of the BOX Radical Solutions to Economics and Social Issues we see on the Horizon. Local Governments can lead in small steps. National and State Government action is also needed.

Promote the use of the Land and Resources you have.

Plant Fruit Trees, Allow Each Home a Small group of (2 to 6) Chickens for Food, Perhaps even a GOAT.. Encourage the practice of canning, and crop sharing.

Being Frugal with time and resources allows you to do more with less.

It is time we look at Sustainability, Permaculture, and what we can do right here in Grand Terrace rather than looking outward for Retail Imports of Deadly Products imported from China, or food trucked in on freeways that are subject to closures.

What would have happened in California if the majority of the Fire Evacuees could not return home in a week or two? Are we ready?

From the Email InBox: Red Fridays Support and Rember Troups

Red Fridays.

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday.

The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that .. every red-blooded America n who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers.

If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

Gramps Must Add:

I support our troops. I have currently have family in the Military, and some even in combat areas. We all have or know someone in the Military or Reserves. YES We SUPPORT THEM. We should support their families also.

A Red shirt may be a way of drawing attention to the fact we have Men and Women, Fathers and Mothers, Sons and Daughters, putting their lives at risk and in many ways surrendering their free will to determine their daily actions so that we may enjoy our daily lives.

A Red shirt should be a statement of awareness of their service. It should also remind the Silent Majority that we are at war and ask what are they doing to end that war.

We can in part end the war by, reduction of Imported Oil. Oil money pays for Terrorists, motivates Terrorists and is an economic weakness that we depend upon it. We can stop all use of Illegal Drugs within our community and family. Drug Money pays for the Terrorists in most countries including our own.

We can insist that if we are at war the Entire Country Participates: This includes: A DRAFT, and raising up a FULL FORCE and FULL Equipment to WIN the conflict without any "Conditions". We must regain the ability to manufacture inside this country and cut the Trade Deficit with China, and other countries that are contributing or supporting terrorists and countries that are supporting actions like Darfur.

We can purchase and demand Made in USA with USA Products and Components when we by Food or anything. We are being attached by Chemical Weapons dressed up as Food and Toys imported from China. We just have not identified this practice as being a terrorist attack. IF, Osama Bin Laudin was a toy manufacture the liable would be applied to the very same acts.

IF we did the above we would be supporting our troupes. Wearing a Red T Shirt made in China is only a surface gesture, like a Cheer at a Foot Ball Game, it does not carry the ball down field. It is just a component of Feel Good for the Spectators. War is not a Spectator Sport.

Further more: The email suggests that the Red Shirts represents a "Silent" majority, and implies that those who are against the policy, or implementation of the War are in some way not in support of our troupes is a idea I have to fully REJECT. A Truly Patriotic, Loyal, Good American can be against the Policy of a Specific Military Action Ordered by OUR President, and still be in support of our troupes. Any suggestion otherwise is Anti-American, Group Think. Please don't get on that band wagon, it leads to Dictatorships and Tyranny and a loss of the very freedoms and rights the men and women in our military joined up to protect.

I am opposed to those who act up in undignified ways. Those who protest at Funerals, or act up in public meetings do not serve their cause. They convince no one. It gets media attention, but does not informed or enlighten the politic. This is a Flaw of the Media. The Media is chum for these people. Police and Media response is as much a cause of these acts as the Show Boat Protesters. Often if Police and Media didn't show up, the Protest March or Speech would happen and the folks would leave. It becomes a feeding frenzies because of the Police and Media Attention and Reaction.

IF you identify with a group or opinion, do not deserve that group or opinion by rude, disruptive behavior. Act with Dignity, have a factual based opinion and support it with reason and calm. THIS will have mush more impact on the population and the world opinion of what an American and America stands for.

How can we localize some of these actions:

We can identify military families in our community that may need a lawn mowed, an extra bag of groceries, a invitation to a dinner, or even an evening of babysitting. We can write to our troops abroad and in training. We can Visit the VA and help out a Vet. We can buy Made in USA as our LOCAL EMPLOYMENT and Production EMPLOY ES Military Family Members.

We can reduce our support and pandering to Countries that contribute to the conditions which cause unrest and global instability.

We can insist that our Taxes Go UP to Pay for the WAR EFFORT and not Leave the Debt hanging over the NEXT GENERATION to pay for and thus causing an economic situation that will nurture future political conditions ripe for war.

IF WE are at WAR: PEACE has FAILED...

We must ask why PEACE FAILED, and LEARN how to Not Perpetuate this PEACE FAILURE in the FUTURE. This would be the best support of our Troops. Then if we MUST go to WAR, it must be a total and complete effort, shared by ALL.

Declare WAR:
Go to War with The Military You Have.
Draft and Train The Second Wave.
Tax and Ration
Support the Veteran's and Family of Military
Limit the War Profits of Corporations.

WIN an ABSOLUTE VICTORY

Or DO NOT Go to War.

You don't need a Red Shirt to make a statement. Take ACTION that requires a Sacrifice then you get my attention, and respect. This is how we Support our Troops.

GRAND TERRACESemi crash into bridge litters concrete on 215

tractor-trailer hauling a forklift smashed the bottom of the Newport Avenue bridge Wednesday morning, causing pieces of concrete to fall onto the 215 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol said the tractor-trailer struck the overpass at 10:54 a.m. and then got off the freeway at Barton Road.
Concrete fell onto a lane and continued tumbling for at least 20 minutes, CHP Officer Joe Ramos said.

No injuries were reported.

Officers closed one lane and at 11:19 a.m. issued a Sig Alert. Traffic backed up about a mile on the southbound 215 and the westbound 10 Freeway. Caltrans crews came to the scene to clear the 215 of debris and repair the damaged bridge.

COLTON Family hoses down suspected arson fire
Arson is suspected in a house fire early Wednesday that left a family to fight the flames with garden hoses.

Three fire engines responded at 1:40 a.m. to a house in the 700 block of East Washington Street.

Firefighters found several residents attacking the blaze with hoses. The fire had spread through several rooms, Colton fire Capt. Kevin Valentin said.

"There was very little work to do," he said.

A passer-by noticed smoke and flames in the house and alerted the family, firefighters said.
Three adults and two children escaped unharmed.

Property damage was estimated at $5,000.

Arson investigators were looking into what started the blaze, which they deemed suspicious.

British retailer Tesco held an unannounced "soft opening" of its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market store in Hemet on Nov. 1.

The store is now open for business in a commercial plaza at the southwest corner of Florida and Lyon avenues.

Five other Fresh & Easy stores in Southern California, including one in Upland, are slated to have their grand openings Thursday.

The stores, about 10,000 square feet in size, offer prepared and ready-to-heat meals, organic and private-label offerings, and grocery staples.

Tesco plans to open 48 Inland Fresh & Easy stores by the end of 2009, in the first wave of more than 100 planned for California, Arizona and Nevada.

INLAND
Hundreds apply for Fresh & Easy jobs
Almost 1,000 people applied for 170 positions at the first six Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Stores slated to open in Southern California on Nov. 8. British retailer Tesco said in a statement that all of the six locations have been staffed, including stores in Hemet and Upland.
More than half of the new employees live within three miles of the stores, all are working more than 20 hours per week and more than 40 percent are full-time, the statement said.
Three workers have been promoted to management-level positions.
Tesco announced last month it plans to open at least 48 Inland locations of Fresh & Easy by 2009, in 33 cities.
Its first wave of U.S. stores includes more than 100 locations in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.

_________________________________________

Tesco is going to open a Fresh and Easy Market in Grand Terrace. All that has been in the paper now twice. The information is limited to being on the "Corner of Mt. Vernon and Barton Rd. While this description would fit logically that the Fresh and Easy Market would be moving into the Stater Brothers Market as Jack Brown has a month to month lease and has not been interested in continuing a lease option in that location.

However, there is a single land owner of the area where, The USMail, Radio Car Race Track, the Barbershop Strip Mall, and even the Little House is owned by a single individual who has recently listed the property on the Corner of Mt. Vernon and Barton Rd "Except for Starbucks" as being available for Lease and Construction to fit tenant. So, there are two options for the location of the Tesco Fresh and Easy Market.

There is no information of which it is. Perhaps even CVS would sell their lease as their business isn't quite what they expected... Perhaps a third option.

Well, I hope the small businesses in the Strip Mall, Blue Mt Framers, Bead Shop, Mortgage Shop, Ice Cream Shop, La Tierra and the Chiropractor, and the Radio Controlled Race Track all have fall back plans when their landlord sells, or terminates their leases. These small often family citizen owned businesses will find it difficult to move to a new location and stay viable. Just as there is a need for a range of rental or home prices, businesses need to have a range of prices and options in order to break even and support their employees and the owners.

Let's Hope, that the landlords in GT have this in mind when they Develop their property. Let's hope that Tesco can see it is better to move into an empty Grocery Store Spot, and start a business, than to Build a New Spot, have Stater's Mega Store and possibly a Cardenas to compete with all in the same market. It would be interesting if that happened.

However, the site traffic pattern would offer challenges as Parking and Entrance and Egress to a Large High Traffic business may be problematic, but no doubt in Grand Terrace traffic won't be an issue that would kill a development.

Strong Small Local Businesses are good for the Sustainable Community. The more times a dollar circulates inside the community the better. It would be fantastic if a store in Grand Terrace, sold product made or grown in Grand Terrace, this would add to sustainability.

Woman's Club Hamburger Cook Out / Country Fair

Report on the Women's Club Hamburger Cook Out / Country Fair

It was also a pleasure to smell the cooking of the hamburgers.... mmmmm yummmy...

The Gathering of old friends, and family members gather together for an outing and day was also a great thing to see. The Hamburger Cook Out is an opportunity to bring the family and friends together, entertain, and not have dishes to wash. Clearly some of the folks in attendance make it an annual no stress event.

This year was different.... there were pickled Jalapeno Peppers for your Burger... a nice addition to the selections. Hats off and tongs clapping for the folks who cooked, served and organized the event.

Women's Club Hamburger Cook Out is part of the Country Fair.

As a Matter of Fact if you were asked which came first did you know that the Woman's Club Hamburger Cook Out has been a feature in Grand Terrace long before there was a City or Country Fair.

Yet, the City Staff and Chamber of Commerce Failed to include the even in the Blue Mt. Outlook. There was at least a sign directing folks to the Hamburger Cook Out while you visited the Country Fair. This was an IMPROVEMENT of sorts.

There seems to be a pattern of exclusion or not giving recognition of the Women's Clubs Activity in Grand Terrace. So, here it is... Have a great meal of a Hamburger, Chips, Drink and a Brownie for 4.00. Then go to see what was happening at the Country Fair.

A quick round tour of the Country Fair included booths by the City of Grand Terrace, the Walking Stick Carver, the knitting and blanket booths, bead craft, Boy Scouts, the Train Man, a craft table, 4H and a Painter, and a Plant Man, and the Library Selling Books and VCR Tapes. ( If someone is left out let me know.) Inside there was the chili cook off, and so forth... Demonstrations of different activities also took the stage from time to time.
