GRAND TERRACESemi crash into bridge litters concrete on 215

tractor-trailer hauling a forklift smashed the bottom of the Newport Avenue bridge Wednesday morning, causing pieces of concrete to fall onto the 215 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol said the tractor-trailer struck the overpass at 10:54 a.m. and then got off the freeway at Barton Road.
Concrete fell onto a lane and continued tumbling for at least 20 minutes, CHP Officer Joe Ramos said.

No injuries were reported.

Officers closed one lane and at 11:19 a.m. issued a Sig Alert. Traffic backed up about a mile on the southbound 215 and the westbound 10 Freeway. Caltrans crews came to the scene to clear the 215 of debris and repair the damaged bridge.

COLTON Family hoses down suspected arson fire
Arson is suspected in a house fire early Wednesday that left a family to fight the flames with garden hoses.

Three fire engines responded at 1:40 a.m. to a house in the 700 block of East Washington Street.

Firefighters found several residents attacking the blaze with hoses. The fire had spread through several rooms, Colton fire Capt. Kevin Valentin said.

"There was very little work to do," he said.

A passer-by noticed smoke and flames in the house and alerted the family, firefighters said.
Three adults and two children escaped unharmed.

Property damage was estimated at $5,000.

Arson investigators were looking into what started the blaze, which they deemed suspicious.
