GRAND TERRACE Deliveryman wakes woman in burning home

A newspaper deliveryman alerted a woman early Saturday morning that her house was on fire, helping her to safety while firefighters doused the blaze.

The unidentified Los Angeles Times deliveryman spotted the fire in the 11800 block of Arlis Court about 4:35 a.m. Saturday. He dialed 9-1-1 and then banged on the woman's door until she answered, according to San Bernardino County fire department news release.

Firefighters attributed the quick actions of the newspaper deliveryman to helping save the life of the unidentified 67-year-old woman, whose adult son was not home at the time of the fire, officials said.

Firefighters from the San Bernardino County, Loma Linda and Colton departments extinguished the blaze in about 50 minutes. It was contained to the garage, patio and attic and caused about $200,000 in damage.

The cause of the blaze was attributed to faulty wiring in the garage, county fire Capt. Jack Dejong said.
