Waiting for the building of Grand Terrace High School or what ever it will be named and located is hardly an acceptable option for the 3000 plus students that will be crammed onto the CHS campus for at least 3 more years.
The following suggestion is hence made. Relocate to temporary quarters all classes offered for 9th grade or freshman students to possibly the old K Mart Building and area on S Mt. Vernon. This site has been vacant for years and can be rapidly modified for an emergency school site.
The Freshmen Class is the largest, with the highest dropout rate, and may benefit most from the concentration of the staff on that group of students. Jr varsity Sports can be conducted after school at one of the Grand Terrace School's Athletic Fields. Band and other extra curricular activities that freshman normally participate in can be adjusted as Jr Varsity type activities, band and the arts classes could combine after school if that is a requirement.
With the target date of the new school being open the next year's freshmen class would be the first graduates of the new school.
The over crowding of CHS is cruel to the students and the staff. The campus has a jail compound appearance rather than a school environment. Perhaps an innovative and creative interim solution is a timely idea.
