Spring Band Concert Terrace Hills Middle School

The efforts of the band students in Grand Terrace and Colton High School were displayed Tuesday night in the Multi purpose room at THMS. The room was filled with students and parents. At the beginning of the concert there was standing room only with the bands waiting to play being assembled in the back of the room, and outside on the patio.

The band members while on stage were obviously taking their task very seriously. Each of them doing their best to perform the various selections. The audience particularly enjoyed tunes it could recognize or had a strong brass and bass component.

It Is Clear Audience Behavior should be part of the lesson plan for the students in these programs. We should show each performance the same level of respect and opportunity as we want for ourselves. However, the band members waiting their turn on stage were less focused and disciplined, often talking and generally horsing around being a distraction to the performances being offered, making it difficult to appreciate and enjoy those on stage.

The progression from the beginning bands to the Colton High School Band shows the skills levels attained by each group. Having the Colton High School Band demonstrate what the Middle School Students have to look forward to is always a good idea for recruitment. Unfortunately, their off stage behavior did not match their onstage performance, and may make parents question having their students participate in such an undisciplined group. There is more to being mature than a black suit and tie, or a Tiger Band Shirt.

Each reader of this should go hear the Main Street Community Band's Concerts. Please be polite if you do.
