Councilman Jim Miller, who has more than 25 years experience in rental property management, suggested that perhaps exemplary landlords could be waived from paying the fee unless the city sees problems.

"I don't want to hurt those people who do take care of their units," Miller said, his voice raising. "But I'll tell you right now: I do want to hurt those who don't take care of their units." ...........

"Lately it seems that in Grand Terrace, everywhere we turn there is a penalty or fee being imposed on us," said longtime city resident Kim Hathaway...............

GrandpaTerrace's Comment: Perhaps the wrong person is sitting on the Council... Is Kim Available to serve our community on the council or as Mayor?

The community residents that spoke had more common sense than all the staff and council combined. While they were allowed to speak and they were heartily applauded by all the residents in attendance. No matter--the city let you speak for 3 minutes, now they will go ahead and do whatever they want that takes more "fees" for code compliance or paperwork while assuring you that this is not a tax and they are increasing your property values. The law of economics says that when costs increase, profits decrease thereby reducing property values overall. Your city at work for their benefit, not yours!

The city is in the full time business of taking your money! When they are not doing that they are borrowing $13 Million plus interest for you to pay off later. But now, they say they can't afford any programs for youth. Some cities build skate parks on land near drainage areas where buildings would be unwise. This would be a better use of the manhole builders site. This council only rubber stamps staff recommendations, or tweaks them slightly around the edges without giving staff the direction they clearly need! The staff works for all of us who pay their salary. Let's tell them what we DO want, as well as what we DONT want. If they dont listen, vote them out and get a council that can clean house if necesssary.
